Bridlington School: A History

"They hand on the torch of life" by M J A Mortimore

At noon on 14th June 1898, the foundation stone of the new Bridlington Grammar School was laid and on 20th September 1899 the school opened its doors to the first intake of pupils.

One hundred years later, Mike Mortimore, a teacher at the school for 31 years until his retirement in 1988 has written the first detailed and compelling history of the school which in 1999 celebrated its centenary.

However, "Bridlington School: A History" begins, not one hundred years ago, but more than five hundred and fifty years ago when, in 1447, King Henry VI bestowed a grant on Bridlington Priory to support six boys who were to be taught both grammar and song. From this first provision, the author has traced the development of the "grammar" school in Bridlington, through the centuries to the centenary of the opening of Bridlington School on its present site.

Making use of the growing School Archive and many first hand reports of Old Boys' experiences of Bridlington School, Mike Mortimore has written a highly readable account which not only covers the momentous times in the life of the School, such as the impact of two World Wars, but also the everyday life of the School which includes Sports Days, Rugby Matches, The CCF, The School Plays, School Trips and the unforgettable Masters' Concerts!

"Bridlington School: A History" also charts the many changes in educational practice such as the introduction of the 11+ and the advent of the Comprehensive system, which resulted in the joining of Bridlington School with the Bridlington High School for Girls. One chapter gives a concise history of the High School from its opening in 1905 to 1975 when it joined with Bridlington School.
